Summer research lab

We continue our research on using head mounted displays (HMDs) for the sake of space exploration. To make the invisible visible, the abstract tangible, but also to attune our senses to new dimensions of the real.

Some resulting thoughts and tools (developed in collaboration with Ben Woodard ) on this will be presented 27.-29.10.23 at the very promising Digitalitäten und Ökologien im Feld des Tanzes symposium of the gtf.

Further, we are happy to collaborate with Oblique sensations on the general development of HMD usage.

On a side note, I.A.S.A. developed software for enhancing the choreographing of robots, specifically for the new creation of Simon Speiser.

Bravo to IASA expert Pêdra Costa!

Proudly, we announce that Pêdra Costa received the Erste Bank Art Award 2023 :

The jury was convinced by Pêdra Costa's artistic practice drawing from a wide variety of fields such as performance art, visual and urban anthropology as well as a tarot reading.

Known for working with their body as a primary medium to conceive anti-colonial strategies, pedagogies of self-care, and queer statements, they investigate spiritual technologies and the concept of the “global south” – the jury believes that their parallel engagement with intellectual, political, spiritual and aesthetic questions is of great significance to contemporary discourse, both in Vienna and Warsaw. With their proposal of an exhibition excluding the physical presence of their own body, Pêdra Costa engages with a well-known, yet lately untouched practice. As their first institutional solo exhibition in Vienna, they aim to explore the concept of tarot cards and spiritual practices, creating a multi-sensory experience and a journey of self-exploration.

Premiere soon: Digit(al) - on touching Clouds

- a choreographic object

How many angels fit in a cloud? This outdated medieval scholastic problem reemerges today in guise of clouds, bits and data. While much our work consists of manipulating data, we seldom ask: how does it feel like to touch data? What do clouds feel like?

Digitus (lat. “fingerbreadth“, „number“) stems from the Proto-Indo-European *deyǵ- (“to show, point out”). New technologies enable us to, quite literally, touch and handle digital objects. This folding back of touch onto abstraction provides a fertile setting to explore both their materiality and the way they, in turn, move us through space: a choreography.
